Ablauf (m)
ˈaplaʊ̯f
Ablauf is a core German noun covering three genuinely distinct senses: an organised sequence of events, the expiry of a time period, and in its literal sense a physical drain. The right English equivalent depends entirely on context.
1. process
Use process, procedure, or sequence when Ablauf refers to a structured course of action or a planned order of events.
2. expiry · legal / administrative
When Ablauf marks the end of a time period such as a deadline, contract, or validity window, translate it as expiry in British English or expiration in American English.
3. drain
In its literal, technical sense, Ablauf denotes the opening or pipe through which liquid drains away.
Notes
Watch the British/American split for the temporal sense: expiry (BE) vs. expiration (AE). Also note that the course-of-events sense can be rendered as course, e.g. im Ablauf der Ereignisse translates as in the course of events, a usage that sits between the process and expiry senses.
