Spaß haben describes the state of experiencing joy, amusement, or enjoyment, whether at a party, during play, or while pursuing an activity. English offers several idiomatic equivalents that differ only slightly in register and connotation.

Notes

A common mix-up: Spaß haben (a person experiences fun: Das Kind hat Spaß) contrasts with Spaß machen (something is fun: Das macht Spaß = That is fun). The literal rendering It makes fun is ungrammatical in English. Use It is fun or I am having fun instead.
