periodic table

/ˌpɪəriˈɒdɪk ˈteɪbəl/

The periodic table is the systematic arrangement of all known chemical elements, ordered by atomic number and electron configuration. In German, there is one universally accepted equivalent used across school curricula and scientific writing.

1. Periodensystem · chemistry

The sole standard German translation, used in school, university, and research, often written in full as "Periodensystem der Elemente" (abbrev. PSE).

The periodic table now contains 118 confirmed chemical elements.
Das Periodensystem umfasst heute 118 bestätigte chemische Elemente.

She had a large periodic table poster hanging above her desk.
Über ihrem Schreibtisch hing ein großes Periodensystem-Poster.

Mendeleev's original periodic table deliberately left gaps for elements yet to be discovered.
Mendelejews ursprüngliches Periodensystem ließ bewusst Lücken für noch zu entdeckende Elemente.

Notes

The full form "Periodensystem der Elemente" and its abbreviation PSE appear mainly in textbooks and academic writing. The rarely used alternative "Periodentafel" exists in German but sounds unfamiliar to native speakers and is best avoided.
