Auswahl (f)

/ˈaʊ̯sˌvaːl/

Auswahl covers both the act of choosing and the resulting set of available options. Depending on whether the focus is on the process, the breadth of choice, or a curated group, English reaches for selection, range, variety, or (in sports) squad.

1. selection

The most versatile equivalent, covering both the act of choosing and the resulting set of items. It works in nearly all contexts.

The selection of applicants follows clearly defined criteria.

The café offers an excellent selection of homemade cakes.

Ich habe meine Auswahl bereits getroffen.
I've already made my selection.

2. range · commerce, retail

Emphasizes the breadth of available options, a natural fit when stressing variety in a product or service offering.

The shop stocks an impressive range of wines from around the world.

Our range of spare parts has grown considerably over the past few years.

3. squad · sports

In sports, Auswahl, especially Nationalauswahl, refers to a selected team or squad, typically at national level.

He was called up to the German national squad for the first time.

The national coach's squad includes many debutants this time.

Notes

When expressing freedom to choose, choice fits better than selection, 'I had no choice' rather than 'I had no selection'. Conversely, 'a wide range of options' often sounds more natural in everyday speech than 'a wide selection', even though both are grammatically correct.
