jeweils

/jeˈvaɪls/

This adverb expresses a distributive or pairwise-matching relationship, something applies to each member of a group individually, or two lists of items correspond to each other in the stated order. The right English equivalent depends on the structure of the sentence.

1. each

The most common translation in the distributive sense: every member of a group individually receives or does something. Also works for recurring points in time.

Der Newsletter erscheint jeweils am ersten Montag des Monats.
The newsletter comes out on the first Monday of each month.

Wir haben den Teams jeweils eine andere Aufgabe zugeteilt.

2. respectively

The right fit when two or more series of items correspond to each other in the order stated. Common in factual or formal writing.

Berlin and Vienna have around 3.7 and 1.9 million inhabitants, respectively.

3. at a time

Appears mainly with numerals to indicate how many units apply per batch or turn.

Four guests may use the elevator at a time.

Die Dokumente wurden jeweils in Dreiergruppen geprüft.
The documents were reviewed in groups of three at a time.

Notes

"jeweils" and "je" overlap but are not always interchangeable: "je" typically precedes a numeral directly ("je fünf Euro" = five euros each), while "jeweils" modifies the whole clause. "Respectively" has a slightly formal ring in English, native speakers often restructure the sentence rather than append it. Do not confuse with the adjective "jeweilig" (= respective, current).
