at the last minute

The expression describes something done at the very last possible moment, just before a deadline expires or an opportunity closes. German offers two common equivalents depending on how formal or colloquial the context is.

1. in letzter Minute

The direct, register-neutral standard translation, works equally well in formal writing and everyday speech.

The rescue team arrived at the last minute and pulled the hiker to safety.

Colloquial German idiom, often with a slightly ironic or exasperated undertone, suggesting habitual procrastination or a characteristically tight finish.

He always finishes his homework at the last minute.
Er erledigt seine Hausaufgaben immer auf den letzten Drücker.
We caught the last train at the last minute, the doors were already closing.
Wir haben den letzten Zug auf den letzten Drücker erwischt, die Türen schlossen sich schon.

Notes

"In the nick of time" is a common near-synonym but carries a different nuance: it implies something bad would have happened moments later, adding a strong sense of relief. Closer to German "gerade noch rechtzeitig". "At the last minute" is emotionally neutral and refers purely to timing.
