Feature

/ˈfiːtʃər/

Feature can denote a distinguishing characteristic, a product capability, or a full-length film, depending on context. Each use case calls for a different German equivalent, though the English borrowing itself is firmly established in German tech and media vocabulary.

1. Feature [technical] · software / product management

In software development and product management, the English borrowing das Feature (neuter noun) is universally used in German and is the most natural choice.

This feature allows users to sync their data across all devices.
Dieses Feature ermöglicht es Nutzern, ihre Daten geräteübergreifend zu synchronisieren.

2. Merkmal

The go-to translation for a distinguishing characteristic of a person, object, or concept outside of tech contexts; Eigenschaft (property, quality) is an equally valid alternative.

Her most distinctive feature is her ability to remain calm under pressure.
Ihr auffälligstes Merkmal ist ihre Fähigkeit, unter Druck ruhig zu bleiben.

Transparency is a defining feature of good governance.

3. Spielfilm · media / film

In the film industry, a feature or feature film refers to a full-length theatrical production, as opposed to a short film or documentary.

The director's debut feature won the grand prize at the festival.
Der Debut-Spielfilm des Regisseurs gewann den Hauptpreis auf dem Festival.

Notes

The loanword das Feature (neuter, plural die Features) is so entrenched in German tech culture that using Funktion or Merkmal can sound stilted in those circles. Outside tech, however, the English word feels out of place. As a verb, avoid the calque featurieren and use zeigen, vorstellen, or mit ... in der Hauptrolle instead.
